Residents interested in serving the community and helping shape the future of New Hope are encouraged to consider running for City Council this fall. Candidate filing for the 2026 election opens Tuesday, May 19.

This year, New Hope voters will elect three City Council members, including two four-year terms and one two-year term to complete an unexpired term. City Council positions are elected at large, meaning council members represent the entire city, and all positions are non-partisan.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible to run for New Hope City Council, candidates must:

  • Be an eligible Minnesota voter
  • Be at least 21 years old upon assuming office
  • Have lived in New Hope for at least 30 days prior to the General Election (proof of residency will be required)

HOW TO FILE
Candidates may file for office at New Hope City Hall, 4401 Xylon Ave N, during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., beginning Tuesday, May 19. Filing closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2.

Please note that City Hall will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

A $5 filing fee is required unless the candidate submits a petition with the required number of signatures from eligible voters, as permitted by state law.
