New Hope's Night to Unite is Aug. 4, 2026

What is Night to Unite (formerly National Night Out)?
New Hope's Night to Unite (formerly National Night Out) is an annual community-building campaign held on the first Tuesday in August.

Night to Unite promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our New Hope neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. It is an excellent opportunity to speak with police officers, city staff, elected officials and representatives from organizations that serve the City of New Hope.

Neighborhoods host various events, including block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, sharing of safety and crime prevention strategies, visits from police, neighborhood walks, contests and more.

NIGHT TO UNITE REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Register your party today! Neighborhoods are invited to register their Night to Unite gatherings with the City of New Hope and the New Hope Police Department. Registration helps coordinate visits from public safety staff and other City representatives, including police, fire, public works and City leadership.

Neighborhood Watch is one of the most effective ways to prevent crime and reduce fear. Active participation in Neighborhood Watch forges bonds between neighbors to help reduce burglaries, theft, and other crimes and also forms a partnership between police and the community we serve.

New Hope has approximately 60 active Neighborhood Watch Groups. Neighborhood Watch Groups should meet at least two times per year, once with police to discuss crime prevention or a related topic of interest to the neighbors, and a second more informal meeting or block party to ensure neighbors are staying in touch and informed. Neighborhood Watch Groups are also asked to have members sign up for Operation ID, a free program to assist residents in marking valuable property as a tool to prevent theft, and to assist officers in returning property to the owner if it is lost or stolen.

The New Hope, Crystal and Robbinsdale Police Departments offer a Community Police Academy each fall for adult community members of the three cities, of all ages and backgrounds, who want to learn more about their local police department.

The no-cost classes are held each fall and run for seven weeks, beginning in September. Space is limited and participants must commit to attending all seven classes.

 Please note: A brief background check is conducted on all applicants.

Most instructors are New Hope, Crystal or Robbinsdale police officers.

Class instruction topics include:

• Crime scene processing
• Court procedures
• K-9 demonstrations
• Mental health in law enforcement
• Juvenile crime
• Narcotics
• Dispatching
• Use of force
• Crime prevention strategies 

Community Police Academy Registration
Registration for the Community Police Academy will be available once dates for 2026 are finalized. 

The New Hope Crime Prevention Fund Board is an independent 501c (3) organization, administered by a volunteer board of directors, whose purpose is to encourage the prevention of crime and the apprehension of criminals in the city of New Hope by:

• informing New Hope citizens of methods of discouraging crime on their property and in their community
• advancing, promoting and administrating charitable and educational activities and projects for the purpose of crime prevention and the apprehension of criminals in New Hope

Annual Bike Rodeo

The New Hope Police Department participates in the an annual Bike Rodeo the first week of May each year.  The Bike Rodeo is co-sponsored by police, fire and parks and recreation as well as several community groups and volunteers from the cities of New Hope, Crystal, Golden Valley and Robbinsdale.  The location of the Bike Rodeo rotates each year. 

The Bike Rodeo is open to the public and includes safety courses for children to ride through, low-cost helmet sales, helmet fitting, food and bike safety prizes. A flyer will be available as the event gets closer.  

Prevent Bike Theft

Please take the time to record the Make, Model, Serial Number, Color, and anything unique about your bike.  Put this information in a safe place in case your bike is ever stolen. Take photos of the serial # and of the whole bike so there is a better chance of your bike being returned if recovered by police.  The chances of recovery without the serial number are very low, and it is also difficult to prove the bike belongs to you.  If you have Operation ID, etch your number on your bicycle!  If you would like to sign up for Operation ID to mark your bicycle and other valuable property, Please Contact Us.

The New Hope Police Department has a portable Smart Speed Trailer that can be set up to monitor the speed of passing cars in New Hope. The trailer serves as a reminder to drivers of the maximum allowable speed for the roadway and gives a digital readout of the speed as a vehicle approaches the trailer. This is a great tool to help drivers, but also lets residents see the speed that a vehicle is traveling through the neighborhood.

In Hennepin County there is a county-wide curfew ordinance for anyone under 18.  The curfew was designed to protect children and teens from being involved in, or victimized by, crime during nighttime hours. 

Under 12	Sunday through Thursday - Home by 9 p.m. Friday and Saturdays - Home by 10 p.m.
Ages 12-14	Sunday through Thursday - Home by 10 p.m. Friday and Saturdays - Home by 11 p.m.
Ages 15-17	Sunday through Thursday - Home by 11 p.m. Friday and Saturdays - Home by 12:01 a.m.

  

There are exceptions for employment, school, religious observances, sponsored recreational activities, emergencies, errands at the direction of a parent or guardian and engaging in activities protected by the First Amendment.  The law applies if the child is any public place after curfew hours including walking, biking, and driving a vehicle.

If young people are in a public place or business after the above hours without a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult, the police may give them a ticket. A public place means any place to which the public or a substantial group of the public has access and includes, streets, highways, and common areas of schools, hospitals, apartment houses, office buildings, transport facilities and shops.
