2020 Census

We Count MinnesotaIn the coming months the city will be ramping up its efforts to educate residents about the 2020 Census through various forms of outreach. This includes publishing articles in newsletters, utility bill inserts, posting updates on the city’s website, and making information available at city facilities.

New Hope has a fair amount of housing that is part of historically undercounted communities, including multi-family, renter occupied, senior living facilities, and residents with English as a second language.

General timeline:

  •  March 2020: Residents will receive an advance letter, reminder card, and link to the 2020 Census questionnaire. A paper questionnaire will only be mailed if a household does not complete the questionnaire online.
  • April 1, 2020: Census Day will be celebrated with events across the country. Respondents should include anyone living in their home on that day when completing the questionnaire.
  • August to October 2020: Census Bureau staff will be attempting to reach those who do not respond to mailings by going door-to-door through October of 2020.
  • April 2021: The Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress.
  • July 2021: The Census Bureau will send redistricting counts to states. This information is used to redraw legislative districts based on population changes.

Why is the Census Important?

  • Determines how many representatives each state gets in Congress.
  • Minnesota said to be at risk of losing a congressional seat this year.
  • Helps redraw district boundaries.
  • Impacts how $600 billion in federal funding is distributed each year.
  • At least $1,532 per person is allocated by the federal government to Minnesota each year.
  • Impacts civil rights enforcement through fair housing laws and other legislation.

How Are Individuals Counted

  • The count is based on where people are living on Census Day (assuming it is where they live most of the time).
  • Students: counted at dorm or off-campus housing if that is where they live.
  • Snowbirds: counted where they live most of the time.
  • Homeless: counted where they live and sleep most of the time, or on Census Day.

Identifying Census Employee

Residents can verify that individuals who approach their homes are census employees by noting that representatives must:

  • Must present display badge with photo, Department of Commerce watermark, expiration date.
  • Will provide supervisor contract information and/or regional office phone, if requested.
  • Will provide letter from Director on U.S. Census Bureau letterhead, if requested.
  • May be carrying laptop and/or bag with U.S. Census Bureau logo.
  • Residents can also verify employees by entering their names into the Census Bureau Staff Search on their website.

A Complete Count Committee was formed in 2019 to educate and help make residents feel comfortable in completing the 2020 Census. Members of the committee participated in a Census Bureau training class at New Hope City Hall. The committee has been focusing on bringing awareness to residents about the census through communication and outreach to nursing homes, group homes, apartments, schools, churches, food shelves, and business networking groups.
