Police Volunteer Opportunities

The New Hope Police Department has several volunteer opportunities within the police department and out in the community.  Please click on one or more of the segments below for information on a specific volunteer role you may be interested in.  If you have a volunteer skill that is not listed, please call 763-531-5170 to inquire what other opportunities might be available.
New Hope Police Reserves

New Hope Police Reserves are an all-volunteer unit dedicated to the safety and well-being of New Hope residents. They fill essential roles in both police operations and crime prevention related activities. Working weekend evenings, they assist sworn patrol officers on calls for service, parking enforcement, animal calls, and medical emergencies. In addition to patrol shifts and call-outs, Reserves also assist at New Hope events such as City Day, Safety Camp, and Duk Duk Daze. New Hope Police Reserves also receive requests to assist neighboring reserve units at their city events.

All New Hope Reserve Officers must complete a 10-week course in Reserve training put on by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. If you have questions or are interested in applying to be a New Hope Reserve Officer, please contact Sgt. Chris Swaja or Reserve Capt. Todd Hesemann at 763-531-5170  or email [email protected].

West Metro CERT

The cities of New Hope and Crystal and West Metro Fire-Rescue have teamed up to form the West Metro Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and to provide disaster training for New Hope and Crystal residents.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates participants about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact the community and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Residents who graduate from the basic CERT course will receive CERT equipment and be advised of ongoing training and exercises as they become available. Bimonthly meetings will provide an opportunity for CERT team members to network and for ongoing training.

For more information about CERT, visit the website www.citizencorps.gov/cert.  For questions about our local chapter, please contact Sean Watson, West Metro Fire Rescue District, at [email protected].  The West Metro CERT program is made possible by a grant from the Minnesota Department of Homeland Security.
