New Hope Honors Retirement of Longtime City Planner
Posted on 01/31/2025
At Monday's New Hope City Council meeting, the City honored longtime city planner Alan Brixius for more than 40 years of dedicated service. Community Development Director Jeff Sargent presented Brixius with a plaque in recognition of his extensive planning work over the past four decades.

“I grew up with New Hope,” Brixius reflected. “Both past administrations and the current staff and administration have been incredible and contributed greatly to my career. I am so impressed with everything that we have done and what we’ve accomplished.”

Alan Brixius first joined New Hope in 1984 as a planning consultant, supporting the City's primary planner through the Northwest Association of Consultants. He reviewed development applications and filled in for the planner as needed. In 1987, Brixius became New Hope's primary city planner and continued in that role until his retirement at the end of 2024. His impact on the City has been immeasurable. Over the past 40 years, he has guided New Hope through four updates of its Comprehensive Plan, amended and maintained the zoning ordinance hundreds of times, established multiple design guidelines, and processed numerous land use requests. Every major redevelopment project over the last four decades has benefited from Brixius' expert planning, which has played a crucial role in ensuring the prosperity of New Hope.

“Al has spent his entire career dedicated to New Hope, to ensure that the City would prosper under the guidance of sound planning principles,” Sargent stated. “I think we could all agree that he’s done a fantastic job. Every redevelopment or development project that we’ve seen has been touched by Al’s expertise and we thank him for that.”
