New Hope Police Department has received reports of community members being targeted by tech support scammers.
Tech support scammers may call and pretend to be a computer technician from a well-known company. They’ll tell you they’ve found a problem with your computer and try to make you pay to fix a problem that doesn’t exist.
They may also try to lure you into their scam with a pop-up window that appears on your computer screen. It will appear to look like an error message from your operating system or antivirus software and may even use logos from those companies. The pop-up will encourage you to click or call to get help.
If you receive a phone call you are not expecting from someone alerting you to an issue with your computer, hang up. If you see a pop-up window, don’t click it or call the number. Real security warnings and messages will never ask you to call a phone number.
