Summer Fire Prevention

Summer Fire Prevention

West Metro Fire-Rescue District is seeing an uptick in fires caused by improper disposal of flammable items. Here are some fire prevention tips to keep you, your family and your home safe.

Oily Rags

  • Oils used in oil-based paint, stains and varnishes release heat as they dry. When the heat is not released into the air, it can build up, causing a fire.
  • Never leave oily rags in a pile. Take the rags outside to dry, away from structures.
  • Hang the rags outside or spread them on the ground. Weigh them down, so they do not blow away. Make sure they are not in a pile.
  • Put dried rags in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Fill the container with a water and detergent solution to break down the oils.
  • Keep containers of oily rags in a cool place, out of direct sunlight and away from other heat sources.

Cigarette Butts

  • Never dispose of cigarettes in mulch, potted plants or landscaping. Potting soil often contains fertilizer, which can easily ignite.
  • Always dispose of cigarettes in an unburnable, unmeltable ashtray or a can filled with sand. Use ashtrays with a broad base that won’t tip over and start a fire.
  • Make sure cigarette ashes are out before throwing them in the trash can. Soak ashes in water before throwing them away. Never dispose of hot cigarette ashes in the trash.
  • Put cigarettes out all the way, all the time. Do not walk away from lit cigarettes and other smoking materials.

Flammable Summer Waste

  •  Ensure fireworks or grilling charcoal is completely cooled before putting it in your refuse bin. Let smoldering items sit out a few days or thoroughly soak with water before disposing of them in the trash.
