Parks and Rec Department Awarded

It was a proud moment for the New Hope Parks and Recreation department, and Recreation Supervisor Aaron Thelen at Tuesday night's City Council meeting as New Hope received Minnesota Recreation and Park Association’s Award of Excellence for the Young Mudder program.

The Award of Excellence program recognizes agencies or organizations in Minnesota for outstanding achievements in parks, recreation, and leisure services. A primary goal of the program is to increase public awareness and appreciation for the excellent parks, trails, recreation, and leisure services available throughout Minnesota.

The Young Mudder program was a new event offered last summer and co-sponsored by the cities of New Hope and Crystal. Thelen worked with staff from Crystal to create, plan and run the event. This high action program is for boys and girls ages 6-12 years. The event consists of a unique obstacle course that challenges all the participants with challenges including climbing walls, hay bales, tires, a mud pit, a giant slip and slide, and much more. A DJ was also on site to help keep the participants motivated, along with providing an excellent atmosphere for the event. The 2018 Young Mudder had 191 participants.

The event takes a great deal of coordination, donations and volunteers to make it successful. Both New Hope and Crystal's Public Works departments were vital in helping make this event successful as they built and maintained a few of the obstacles for the event. Each of the 12 obstacles was staffed by local volunteers from various businesses and associations including Armstrong Cooper Youth Lacrosse, Armstrong Cooper Youth Hockey, Advanced Medical of Twin Cities, Crystal Police Department, Farrell's eXtreme Bodyshaping, West Metro Fire, and YMCA of New Hope. Additionally, donations were received for the participant goodie bags from Caribou Coffee (coffee bags), Hy-Vee (water bottles and granola bars), and ReMax (swag bags).

The 2019 Young Mudder is coming soon on Saturday, June 8. Sign up your 6-12-year-old here.
