In 2008, John Elder was appointed to the New Hope City Council in May 2008 to fill a vacant  seat.

Jump ahead 10 years to Election Day 2018, and Council Member Elder was reelected for a third time, and yesterday Elder was sworn in again for another term on city council, lasting through 2022.

Elder has been a New Hope resident for more than 25 years. His community involvement includes: New Hope Police Explorers - conducts annual training in hostage/crisis negotiations, Wings Soccer Club/Minnesota Thunder West Academy manager, Commissioner for the Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission, and New Hope Community Farmer's Market founding and current Board Member.

Elder has worked in law enforcement for more than 30 years, including the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Lakeville Police Department and New Hope Police Department. He is currently a Public Information Officer (PIO) for the Minneapolis Police Department.

He has a A.A. degree in criminology from North Hennepin Community College, a B.S. in police science from St. Mary’s University in Minnesota and an M.A. in public safety administration from St. Mary’s University.
