42nd Avenue Improvements

42nd Avenue Infrastructure Improvements

In partnership with Hennepin County, the city will complete various infrastructure improvements along 42nd Avenue North in 2023. This project aligns with the Minnesota Department of Transportation's Highway 169/42nd Avenue Bridge & Interchange Project, which will also occur in 2023.

Project Location

The city and county project improvements include:
  • Burying Xcel Energy overhead power lines.
  • Installation of new traffic signal lights and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements at the intersection of Boone and 42nd avenues.
  • Installing new decorative lighting along the corridor, similar to the lights added in 2019 to the east of Xylon Avenue.
  • Paving a new pedestrian trail on the south side of 42nd Avenue from Boone Avenue to Gettysburg Avenue and connecting to the new trails being constructed as part of the MnDOT Highway 169/42nd Avenue Bridge Project.
  • Pipe bursting the existing water main along 42nd Avenue from Xylon Avenue to Gettysburg Avenue.
  • Mill & overlay of 42nd Avenue from Winnetka Avenue to Gettysburg Avenue.
  • ADA and signal push button Improvements from Winnetka Avenue to Gettysburg Avenue.

Due to the MnDOT bridge and ramp closures at Highway 169, most traffic on 42nd Avenue will be routed to other connections. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained along 42nd Avenue throughout the majority of the project. There will be times when the intersections of Gettysburg, Boone, and Xylon avenues must close for construction. Detours will be established during those times.
